With more and more American homes including a furry family member, families are looking for cars that are comfortable and safe for our four-footed friends. Some car makers are now (or will in the future) offering vehicles specially designed to be a safe, secure ride for you and your dog. If you're shopping for a new car, check out these pet friendly autos.

A new offering from Honda Motor Co. may get dogs more interested in checking out the inside of their ride rather than hanging their heads out the window. The Japanese automaker showed off a "Dog Friendly" version of the Honda Element SUV at the New York International Auto Show. The new Dog Friendly™ Element concept is coming in the fall of 2009.

Now you can get your dog a cushy ride.

The vehicle features a cushioned pet bed with safety restraints in the cargo area, a spill-resistant water bowl, and even a ventilation fan to keep canines comfortable.

A folding ramp gives animals an easy way to get in and out. In the back seat, there's an integrated pet carrier and machine-washable seat covers to make it convenient and safe to carry smaller pets. The rubber floor mats feature a toy-bone pattern, and paw-print emblems on the side and back of the vehicle draw attention to its pet-friendly status.

The 2009 Toyota Venza offers canine-friendly options in its new five-passenger crossover, which was designed and engineered in the U.S. exclusively for the North American market.

The Venza is available with roughly a dozen pet features, including a rear hatch pet ramp for easier loading and unloading, a leash tether for securing pets in the vehicle, a pet booster seat with harness, a cargo area pet barrier, pet seat-belt buckles, and waterproof, removable hammock-style seat covers. All of these options are available through dealers.

Of course, you can buy many of these pet travel items like ramps and car booster seats from pet supply stores if you decide to get a "plain old car," but it's nice to know that car makers are finally recognizing the importance of pets in our lives and our need to provide safe transport for our pooches.

Your house is also your pet's home, and a pet unhappy with its surroundings can lead to all kinds of problems.

A cat disgruntled with its litter box may decide your prized Oriental rug is a more attractive place to relieve herself. Or your dog might run off every time a car whizzes by if he's not penned in the yard.

Or even worse, an inappropriately caged pet could pose danger to its owners like a recent incident in Oxford, Fla., where a Burmese python broke out of its too-small cage and strangled a two-year-old girl.

While options to house and care for your pet seem nearly limitless, remember that one size doesn't fit all. Your pet's temperament will determine what works best.

Sixty-two percent, or 71.4 million U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association, or APPA, and pet owners love to shower their animal companions with supplies. The trade group estimates pet owners will increase their pet spending 5 percent this year to $45.4 billion.

More households own a dog than any other pet, and keeping a canine friend in the yard is a safety precaution for all.

Many owners choose visible fences made of wood, chain link or heavy wire, to keep your dog in the yard. These are practical and durable. However, they can get costly. The least expensive are do-it-yourself wire fences (Benner's Gardens carries kits between $250 and $1,000 depending on size). Another bonus: they aren't as noticeable as other above ground fences and can be taken with you when you move.

Other options include a chain link fence or a wood fence. With installation, a 300-foot chain link fence costs between $2,500 and $3,500, whereas a wood fence of the same length runs between $5,000-$10,000.

A more affordable option is an underground electric fence, or an invisible fence. The price tag for these: $1,500-$2,000. But if you're a handyman, a do-it-yourself fence runs as much as $400.

The fence is actually a radio antenna that transmits a signal to the dog's collar, which then creates a shock like static electricity. That's usually enough to dissuade a dog from going any further. The learning curve takes about two weeks. Until the dog learns its boundaries, flags are set up along the fence as visual indicators.

Some breeds take more, or less, time to learn the boundaries.

"Golden retrievers are wimps," says Bob Vetere, president of APPA. "It took one time to train mine."

Now, that you've got your dog safely contained in the yard, where's it going to sleep? If it's strictly an outside dog, make sure to provide a dog house with appropriate insulation. Typically, insulation is built into the material of the dog house, so to keep the dog from chewing on it. And it the dog keep him cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Houses range from easy-to-clean plastic ones to the tried-and-true cedar models. If you want something more elaborate, there are multileveled houses and ones with porches or sundecks. One company unveiled a three-room dog house at an APPA trade show. One room was for eating, one for sleeping and one for play. The catch: This monster dog house was intended for indoor use.

62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.4 millions homes

$45.4 billion will be spent on our pets in the U.S.

$3.4 billion of that figure will be spent on grooming & boarding

The pet industry is obviously huge. This category is getting so popular that some major brands that have typically sold their products to humans are starting to get involved in it.

Paul Mitchell, Omaha Steaks, Origins, Harley Davidson and Old Navy are now offering lines of pet products ranging from dog shampoo, pet attire, and name-brand toys to high-end gourmet treats and food.

The franchise industry has certainly jumped into this market with vigor, and the short list of young franchise concepts below demonstrates this fact;

Apricot had never been to Hawaii.

But like anyone, man or beast, who has ever visited the islands, the poodle sensed there was something very special about the place the moment his plane landed.

In this case, that special something was that he wasn’t supposed to be there.

Turns out the airline messed up and Apricot was never loaded onto a nonstop flight from Miami to New York’s JFK Airport, where his anguished owner, writer and lifetime traveler Lea Lane watched the luggage carousel lazily spin without her dog. Hours passed until a 3 a.m. phone call alerted her that the poodle was back in New York after the Hawaii detour. Once home, Apricot stared blankly and wouldn’t respond for hours. Lane never put him on a plane again.

This horror story took place about 25 years ago, and while airlines are more accountable today for the handling and tracking of pets checked as baggage or cargo, stuff still happens, and there’s a lot you can do to ensure your pet has a safer and happier experience if you decide to travel together.

#6 Shetland Sheepdog
Another herding dog, the Shetland takes this ability into the home, showing the same commitment and protectiveness over its human “herd” as the farm raised version does. Highly intelligent, the Sheltie handles life with great efficiency and diligence, learning new commands with little repetition, and making sure that all of the family is safe, sound, and in place. They show great devotion to their families, and are happy to live just about anywhere.

#5 Doberman Pinscher
Due to an inborn fearlessness and deep stamina, the Doberman is one of the most popular of guard dogs. Smart and assertive, they can easily be trained for dominance or docility. Schnoodles are a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle. They vary in size, depending on the size of the parents, from Miniatures maturing between 10 and 15 pounds, to Standards maturing up to 60 pounds! The most popular size is the Mini Schnoodle. They are very good with children, quite tolerant of alot of rough-housing. On a range of 1-10, 10 being the most active (like a Jack Russel Terrier!), they will generally fall in the range of 4-7. 10 Tips to Keep Your Schnoodle Safe and Stress-Free on Halloween

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, yet they can produce gastrointestinal upset should pets ingest them. Intestinal blockage could even occur if large pieces are ingested.

3. Keep wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet could experience damage to his mouth from shards of glass or plastic, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

4. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise extreme caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

5. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume can cause undue stress.

6. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe or bark. Keep a look out for small, dangling, or easily chewed-off pieces on the costume that your pet could choke on.

7. Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not obstruct her vision in any way. Even the sweetest animals can get snappy when they can't see.

8. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

9. Leaving your Pets outside on Halloween is not a good idea. There are plenty of tales of malicious people who tease, injure, steal, torture, even killed peoples pets on Halloween. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

10. IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and become lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip increase the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

The animal kingdom reigns supreme at this endearing parade of furred and feathered creatures. Whether large or small, cute or scary, two footed or four, costumed pets take center stage to beguile and enchant animal lovers of all ages.

The WKEY Pet Masquerade and Parade is a favorite of locals and repeat visitors to Fantasy Fest®. ®. A sparkling glow is cast as the stage bursts (and barks!) with bedecked and bejeweled pets and their adoring humans. Sometimes, the humans look almost as good as the pets! Categories of competition include Most Exotic Attire, Best Theme Adaptation, Pet/Owner Look-a-likes and Junior Division.

The purrrrfectly wonderful folks at local radio station WKEY are the ring masters of this wild and zany animal extravaganza. Call them at 305-296-7511 or e-mail johnstuempfig@clearchannel.com for entry information.

The Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Animals is our shelter's largest fundraiser. In 2006, more than 1,200 people from around Southern California attended this event and helped raise a record $155,000 for the lost, injured and abandoned animals in our care. You don't have to have a dog to participate, just a desire to animals in need!

Everyone is welcome to walk and registration is FREE. But we encourage you to donate or help raise money for our furry friends at the shelter by asking your friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else you may know to sponsor you in the walk.

A lot of people are asking me about crossbreeds and dog hybrids, so I thought I would post some helpful information from Wikipedia to help you understand a bit more...

A dog hybrid is a cross between two different breeds (selectively bred varieties). Hybrids are also known as crossbreeds or crossbreds, although the term crossbreed is also used to refer to a mixed-breed dog where the breed of only one parent or grandparent is known. A dog of unknown parentage is called a mongrel.

In biology, the word hybrid has two meanings. The first meaning is the result of interbreeding between two animals or plants of different taxa. Hybrids between different species within the same genus are sometimes known as interspecificintra-specific hybrids. The cross-breeding of dogs is closest to the latter. hybrids or crosses. Hybrids between different sub-species within a species are known as

The second meaning of "hybrid" is crosses between populations, breeds or cultivars of a single species. This second meaning is often used in plant and animal breeding.

In less technical conversation (and particularly in the dog world) the word hybrid refers to selective breed crosses and their progeny, even if outcrossed to other breeds. For example, the Queensland Wild Dog Management Strategy, September 2002, states that hybrid will also refer to the descendants of crossbred progeny.

Some dog hybrids are now being selectively bred. The term designer dogs is often used to refer to these crosses. The practice causes much controversy; opponents cite the often exorbitant prices charged for what is essentially a mutt.

A Schnoodle is a Poodle hybrid that is a cross-breed of a Poodle and a Schnauzer.

The schnoodle mixes the intellect of the Poodle with the companionship and devotion of the Schnauzer. Schnoodles are very astute. They may, for example, react very strongly when the owner simply glances to the floor for his or her shoes, or the sound of the clanking of car keys; the dog knows that this can be a precursor to the owner leaving the home on some errand. This intelligence (which can range from introspective and analytical, to raw and instinctual depending on the specific dog), coupled with the terrier desire to please the owner, makes most schnoodles easily trainable.

Schnoodles can be very athletic and make good companions for runners looking for a smaller dog, but they do not require running long distances every day to keep them calm.

Fourth of July Schnoodle Dog Safety Tips…

The Fourth of July can be very dangerous to your Schnoodles. Loud noises and sights may frighten them into running away, even breaking through barriers that, under normal conditions, would keep them restrained. This is the busiest day for Animal Control.

Protect your Schnoodle on the Fourth of July, take these precautions:

1. Keep your Schnoodle indoors while fireworks are being displayed in your area.

2. Make sure your dogs are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

3. If you know that your dog is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.

4. If you have a basement, you might want to keep your dog down there, with a radio or TV going to drown out the explosive noises.

5. Even if you are convinced your Schnoodle will do fine at a firework display, resist the temptation to take it.

6. Never approach someone else's pet during a fireworks display. A normally calm animal can snap and bite when scared.

7. Exercise your dog well before the display, so that they will sleep well.

8. Before you release your dog back into the yard, do a quick survey to make sure that there is nothing there to harm it, especially objects it might try to eat or swallow.

9. Never leave dogs outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.

10. Do not leave your dog in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death, in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably already guessed that the answer to this is YES! But are they really dreaming – and if so, what in the world do they dream about?

Many scientists say there is evidence to support the notion that dogs, cats, and in fact, every mammal that’s been studied, does experience dreams.

There are two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and slow wave sleep (SWS). SWS and REM sleep in pets are very similar to that of humans. During this time, the brain processes information learned during the day. Think of it as sorting new information into different mental file folders.

At some point during these two kinds of sleep, dreams take over — in humans as well as in pets. Thus, the twitching, tail wagging, yipping, and pawing your dog does in his sleep, or the tail whipping, chattering, yowling and swatting from your napping cat is likely a reliving of whatever experiences he’s had while awake.

Unfortunately, puppies don’t usually come house trained. You must realize that over the next few weeks YOU will need much patience and time to house train your puppy correctly.

If you want your pup to go to the bathroom outside, you need to pay attention to the times that he will be needing to use the bathroom. Activities like eating, drinking, playing and waking up from naps will all stimulate your pup to go. When he needs to go outside, it helps if you condition him by saying "outside" or "out" in a high-pitched tone of voice, just to get him used to the idea of where he is going. He will soon learn what you mean and that it is time to go to the bathroom.

You must establish where you want your puppy to eliminate. To do this correctly, you have to go outside with your pup every time he needs to go to the bathroom. By your being there, you can easily praise him as soon as he begins to sniff or squat to urinate. You need to praise him in a high-pitched tone of voice, so that he feels he is pleasing you each time he eliminates.

Another consideration in house training your puppy is controlled by when you feed your puppy. Most puppies eliminate within just a few minutes of their meals, so as soon as your puppy moves away from his food bowl, or after 10 minutes, whichever comes first, pick up the food bowl, and then immediately take him outside. Make sure to praise him quickly and soon because praising that comes after he is done, even after 10 seconds, does no good.

I Am Constantly Being Asked... What is a Schnoodle?

Schnoodles are a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle. They vary in size, depending on the size of the parents, from Miniatures maturing between 10 and 15 pounds, to Standards maturing up to 60 pounds!

The most popular size is the Mini Schnoodle. They are very good with children, quite tolerant of alot of rough-housing. On a range of 1-10, 10 being the most active (like a Jack Russel Terrier!), they will generally fall in the range of 4-7. Most have a soft and fluffy coat, which is non-shedding, and quite well tolerated by most people with allergies. Some Schnoodles have a harsher, more terrier type coat, which sheds some while the pup is young, but sheds very little when the dog matures. Coat type is evident by about 5 weeks of age. Coat colors are quite varied - solids like black, silver, white, tan, apricot, sables (a mixture of gold and black), and parti's too - black and white like holstein cows. Phantoms are also quite common - that's black and apricot like the color of doberman pinschers. Schnoodles are quite intelligent and easily trained. They have a more active nature, like terriers, but do enjoy settling down while you read a book or watch TV.

The Schnoodle is a mix breed, a Poodle and Schnauzer cross. Schnoodles are known to be intelligent, people oriented, affectionate and obedient with a good amount of energy. Their coats can vary from rough to soft and come in a wide variety of colors and shed very little. They love to exercise and play and make wonderful companion pets.

1. Schnoodles don't shed making them ideal for those with allergies
2. They are extremely bright and can make great therapy dogs
3. Schnoodles are loving, loyal and great with kids!
